Reading / Writing

Task Description: Since it's almost the holidays here in New Zealand, Rm5 Literacy class is doing a summer learning journey for our Reading and or Writing. The story I read was about Setting Sail. After I read the story I had to list ten items/things to take out to sea

Story:

People from Pacific nations have always been expert explorers and navigators. In the past, they used the stars, sun and ocean swells to find their way (navigate) around the Pacific Ocean. Master navigator, Nainoa Thompson, has used the ancient Polynesian wayfinding skills to navigate around the world. In 2013, Nainoa led a crew across the Pacific Ocean on two large canoes (Hokule’a and Hikianalia). The crew stopped off in Aotearoa, New Zealand in 2015 on their journey and visited the Manaiakalani Schools in Auckland.

Here is a short video about Polynesian navigation. It describes the different ways ancient Polynesian navigators used the natural world to find their way around vast oceans. Incredible!

I think that it would be difficult to be ‘at sea’ for weeks at a time. I would miss my family but I would also enjoy the adventure. Let’s imagine that you were invited to join Nainoa for three weeks at sea. As part of the journey, you have to pack your own food.

First Week of School

On Monday the 12th of October it was the first day back of term 4 we had an immersion assembly.A immersion  assembly is when we get told what the theme is for the term e.g Something in the water, and more.

So when all of pt england had all gotten all settled down, Mr Burt proudly had said ‘’We’re Back In The House ‘’ you must be asking yourself why is he saying that? Well the reason he said that is because it has been a long time since covid that we all could be gathered all together since it is level 1.So first Ms Nua, Mr Somerville, and Mr Jacobson had gotten up on stage with some paint in their hands and then they had been painting all of the children were very curious of what they were painting. And We finally had found out what the theme was: it was drumroll Please ART ALIVE!!

After all of that painting that the teachers had done
Team 1: had introduced what they were learning about and they first tried to create some of the famous paintings such as The Monalisa, unibrow lady and such more, well that's what they are doing and going to be learning about. After Team 1 it was Team 2 to present what they are learning about/doing for art!.

Team 2: is doing art with shapes and different types of colours such as dark colours and bright colours. They’re also doing art on their i-pads, Mrs Gaston was colouring and drawing one of the teachers with dark and bright colours e.g  The bright colour was representing like a happy vibe, with the dark colour it was representing like a negative vibe.

Team 3: is painting walls and also painting on sheets to create a their own painting using dyes and different colours of paints and mixing the different colours to see what  they make e.g red and blue makes purple

Team 4: They forgot to do their show/video to show to the whole school but luckily Mr goodwin had recorded their google meets so this Term they are learning more about maori patterns and the story behind them.

Team 5: We had done a show that Ms Moala had her first day at her work and she had to hide the people through the museum. So Team 5 is learning about all of the famous artists.

Traditional Tongan cooking and food: Coconuts and the Umu

The Coconut is an indispensable ingredient in Polynesian life, it is also dried into cobra or used in cooking oil or body oil. But most of all it is the base of nearly all Traditional dishes in the Polynesian
dine.
Taro Leaves are like spinach mixed with Onions and Corn Beef, it is wrapped in banana leafs and the coconut milk is added last.
The bundles are placed in an underground oven or a umu along with Taro roots or Yam, when it is full the umu is covered with banana leafs and old mats to keep in the heats hours later the bundles/food is removed from the umu.

Pieces of Cloth Pieces of Culture, Tapa Making and Community Collaboration

The Tongan islands lie 23 degrees south of the quitter in the pacific a tropical nation comprising over 100 islands Tonga still has its own king who is not only head of state but his head of the state church, Tonga was never formally colonised by any European nation and therefore its cultural practises today reflect ancient tradition and modern Christianity.
In 1773 Captain James Cook a British explorer described and named the Tonga island as the friendly islands, one of the greatest embodiment of Tongan history culture and religion is Tapa Cloth.. Tapa Cloth is a treasured textile which is made from Natural materials that grow in the Tongan islands no religious ceremony is complete without tapa cloth.
Tapa Cloth is especially prized as a covering for the casket of a deceased person, after a funeral ceremony has been conducted. The casket will be taken to a burial ground.
( Tapa Cloth are made by Bark, The inner bark is taken from several types of trees or shrubs, often mulberry and fig, and designs are applied with paints and vegetable dyes of light brown, red, and black ).

  3. What would you stop? We Should not stop anything going on because the teachers have been trying their best to make the Year 7 step up fun.
  4. What would you add? I would probably add some more activities like Volleyball for sports, probably karaoke for the rotations.
  5. Why do we have such events? We have these events because the Year 7s have a chance to step up and be leaders and show some examples to little kids.
  6. Talk about Whare Tapa Whā and key competencies: Maybe to show knowledge & confidence we can success our talent & share it to the world.
  7. Quick finishers could make up a programme for 2021 events:

Captain Reflections

The 5 things that I heard from the captains from the yr 7 step up:
This Morning we heard things from the Year 7s and 8s Captains.
  • Their highlight was seeing other year 7s stepping up and trying to be leaders and showing examples to the little kids.
  •  They were shy at first but then they got out of their comfort zone.
  • They were learning how to communicate with each other.
  • They were happy to see other yr 7s stepping up and communicating with others.
  • Participating in the activities they had.

5 things that I heard from the Year 8 Captain
  • They were showing off their skills.
  • They had a really fun experience at their Year 8 Leadership Camp.
  • Jezakaia and his friends got scared so they all slept together.
  • Watching their camp group grow into good confident leaders.
  • enjoying and making most of the time they had at camp.

My Step up highlight

Last week when the Year 8s went to camp the Year 7s had a chance to step up and be leaders while the yr 8s are gone to camp. We all were in groups and we had to make Chant, a Name and also pick our two leaders, I was with Ms Tipene my group had to choice to choose a name our choices were: Pe Leaders, Leaders, Crazy G.IZ, and Duck Life. We all had to put our hands up to choose our name, nearly everyone put their hands up for Duck Life, so our name was Duck Life, after we chose our name for the Step Up challenge my table couldn't decide what chant to do so Lorenzo and Moui made a Chant for us: ( Chant: Quack x3 we're gonna quack this challenge, Quack x3 we're gonna clap you fullahs Quack x3 that means Duck Life's Matter, DUCK LIFE OUT ).

My highlight for the Year 7 Step up was doing the Cup challenge with the whole of the other Year 7s. and competing with other people, my other highlight was doing Just Dance in our Rotations when we were split up into our Tahi,Rua and Toru groups for when the Year 8s go down to Tamaki College for Tech.

That was my favourite highlight of the Year 7 step up because  when doing the Cup challenge because it was pretty fun doing when competing with other Year 7s and some of the Year 8s. Doing Just Dance in our Rotations was pretty fun I was dancing with Quincess and Punaiuru and we kept on making up our own dance.
